"Design is not just what it looks like and feels like.

Design is how it works."

Steve Jobs

Design and Technology Intent:

As a federation, our practical and hands-on Design and Technology curriculum inspires our children to use their creativity and imagination to research and explore, design, construct and evaluate purposeful, innovative products whilst considering a specific brief. Our children will apply their learning from different areas of the curriculum such as Science, Mathematics, Computing and Art to create high quality prototypes and products for a wide range of everyday uses. Our children acknowledge past and present designs and this allows them to consider other perspectives and values. Our children are encouraged to challenge themselves and take risks, enabling them to develop their resilience and problem-solving skills not only for themselves, but for others, now and in the future.

We believe that food and nutrition is an important part of our Design and Technology curriculum here at Hamworthy, and we want to instil a love for cooking in all of our children. Teaching our children about the importance of nutritious foods and the impact of different food types on our bodies will inform healthier decision making now and in later life. We recognise that food preparation is a crucial life skill and we offer a unit of cooking within every year group.

Above all, we want our children to gain real satisfaction of seeing their ideas come to life before their eyes and develop an ability to deal with tomorrow's rapidly changing, technological world. We aim for our children to aspire to become a generation of engineers, designers, architects, chefs and more!
