Spellings

New spelling words are taught explicitly on a Monday and the children have lots of opportunities to practise them throughout the week.

The spelling words always follow a spelling rule. We focus on understanding what the words mean, counting the syllables and segmenting the words using our phonics.

Children will be tested on their spellings on the following Monday.

Handwriting

Handwriting is practised throughout the week. The children are shown how to form their letters correctly and when ready, will begin to join some letters together.

Reading

In Year 3, most children follow the Little Wandle Fluency programme once they are able to read 60 words per minute. The children read at least 3 times a week with an adult and have opportunities to read independently too.
