Celebrating our Learning
Summer 1
Our Summer topic is called ‘Round and round the garden’. We have enjoyed growing different types of plants and exploring minibeasts.
We planted sunflowers to take home and for our nursery garden. We’re measuring as they grow. I wonder how tall they will become?
We learnt about how important bees are for our environment. We used the yummy honey they make to create tasty honey sandwiches. We also studied the swirly spirals of snails and other places we can find these patterns in the natural environment. We were very lucky to meet African land snails who spent a week visiting us in nursery. The children used wonderful vocabulary to describe our slimy visitors!
We have been investigators! We wanted to find out what happens if we left an apple from snack for a very long time. We studied and posed questions as we watched it change and decay.
Spring 2
The Gingerbread man was one of our favourite books from our ‘Once Upon a Time’ topic. We loved retelling the story to our friends using story language and vocabulary.
We baked tasty gingerbread men and worked as a team to weigh, measure, mix and roll the dough. Before the gingerbread men went into the oven, the children gave them a stern warning and said “Don’t be cheeky!” and “Don’t run away or we will run and catch you and gobble you up!” The children decided to design a gingerbread trap, just in case the biscuits hopped out!
Luckily, the biscuits behaved themselves and the children told us they were absolutely delicious!
Spring 1
Our Spring 1 topic is ‘Once upon a time’. We enjoyed reading and exploring traditional stories such as The Three Billy Goats Gruff and The Three Little Pigs. We used fantastic story vocabulary and repetitive language in our own learning.
The Starfish Theatre opened with great success. Children used their maths knowledge to sell and buy tickets and popcorn for the show. We created posters with our fine motor skills and worked together with our friends to tell traditional and new stories with the puppets. Bravo!
Mrs Stachowicz told us the story of The Three Little Pigs in Polish. We listened wonderfully!
The children were set the STEM challenge to build a bridge for a billy goat with a range of materials. They rose to this challenge with wonderful creative thinking, testing and exploration!
Autumn 2
In our Autumn 2 topic, ‘Party, party!’ we learnt about lots of different celebrations and occasions such birthdays, Diwali, weddings and Christmas. We thought about the differences and similarities between different celebrations.
Diwali is called the festival of light and is often celebrated by Hindus and Sikhs. It is celebrated around the world every late October or early November. We modelled and decorated colourful diya lamps to light up the dark. We used our fine motor skills to create Rangoli patterns using lots of different materials. We were also inspired to create our own Mehndi patterns and enjoyed Bollywood dancing and the sounds of the dhol drum.
Autumn 1
The Starfish quickly settled into a new year in nursery. We made new friends in our Starfish groups. We learnt about our nursery routines, our superstar rules and explored our classroom and outdoor environment.
This term's topic is called 'Me in my world'. We learnt about differences and similarities between ourselves and our friends and families.
Our very special 'All about me' bag started visiting children's homes this term. We took it in turns to fill the bag with our favourite and special things to show our groups to find out more about our friends. We loved sharing family photographs, special drawings and talking about children's favourite toys and activities.
