Modern Foreign Languages Intent:
At Hamworthy Park Junior School, we teach modern foreign languages in order to provide an opening to other cultures, fostering pupils’ curiosity and deepening their understanding of the world.
In Key stage 2, pupils learn French. The teaching provides an appropriate balance of spoken and written language with the focus being on practical communication. We aim to enable pupils to understand and communicate ideas, facts and feelings in speech and writing. Language proficiency goes hand in hand with Intercultural Understanding so at appropriate points in the year children will learn about key traditions in the French speaking world.
We aim to promote confidence and provide the foundation for learning further languages, equipping pupils to become world citizens.
During lessons, children follow the Salut programme of study where they are taught to understand and respond to spoken and written language, speak with increasing confidence, write at varying length using the variety of grammatical structures that they have learnt and discover and develop an appreciation of a range of writing in French.
